Brad Guzan Retires: Atlanta United Legend Bids Farewell

Brad Guzan, a key figure in Atlanta United’s history and a prominent player for the U.S. men’s national team, has announced his retirement after over 20 years in professional soccer. The 41-year-old goalkeeper shared his decision through a heartfelt message on Instagram, reflecting on his journey from a young boy in Chicago to a celebrated pro athlete.

Guzan joined Atlanta United during its inaugural season in 2017 and quickly became a cornerstone of the team, guiding them to their first MLS Cup victory in 2018. Over the course of nine seasons with Atlanta, he played 224 league matches, becoming a fan favorite known for his exceptional skills and the iconic chants of “Guuuuuuuuz” echoing through Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

In his retirement message, Guzan expressed his gratitude to those who supported him along the way, emphasizing the communal aspect of his journey. He fondly recalled his early days on the field and the fulfillment he found in pursuing his passion. “This journey was never just about me — it’s always been about the people who walked beside me. So thank you — to everyone,” he wrote.

Prior to his time with Atlanta, Guzan had a successful career in England, where he made nearly 150 league appearances with Aston Villa and played for Hull City and Middlesbrough. He also had formative years in Major League Soccer with Chivas USA and the Chicago Fire. Guzan earned 64 caps for the U.S. national team, serving as the first-choice keeper in several international tournaments and contributing to multiple World Cup squads, including participation in the 2008 Olympics.

Following his announcement, MLS Commissioner Don Garber recognized Guzan as a “class act” throughout his soccer career, while Aston Villa also extended their best wishes for his retirement, highlighting his eight years with the club.

As Brad Guzan embarks on this new chapter, his legacy as a dedicated athlete and influential figure in soccer continues to inspire fans and players alike.
