PHOENIX — A heatwave is hitting the Valley this week, with temperatures expected to approach or exceed 110 degrees. This intense heat will persist through Father’s Day weekend, prompting Extreme Heat Watches for central and southern Arizona, particularly on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.
The Grand Canyon is also under an Extreme Heat Watch for areas below 4,000 feet in elevation. Forecasts indicate temperatures could climb between 110 and 114 degrees over the weekend, nearing record high temperatures.
This spike in temperatures aligns with the average first instance of a 110-degree day in Phoenix, which typically occurs around June 11th. As a safety measure, ABC15 has designated Saturday through Monday as Weather Action Days, urging residents to prioritize safety amid these dangerous heat conditions.
To stay safe, individuals are advised to remain hydrated, minimize outdoor activities during peak heat hours (generally from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.), and wear lightweight, light-colored clothing. For those needing to be outside, taking regular breaks in shaded or air-conditioned spaces and applying sunscreen is highly recommended.
Though temperatures are expected to decrease slightly next week, the heat is predicted to linger with highs around 107 degrees by Wednesday.
In other weather news, reports indicate that Phoenix is experiencing lower rainfall averages. The new average for monsoon rainfall from 1991 to 2020 is 2.43 inches, down from 2.71 inches from 1981 to 2010. The yearly rainfall average has similarly decreased from 8.03 inches to 7.22 inches during the same periods.
