Bouyea Joins Suns on Two-Way Deal to Bolster Point Guard Depth

Point guard Jamaree Bouyea, who had a brief stint with the Milwaukee Bucks before being waived, has found a new opportunity with the Phoenix Suns after signing a two-way contract. This move allows Bouyea to continue his NBA career at a time when options appeared to be dwindling.

The Suns’ interest in Bouyea comes as they are in need of a true point guard. With Devin Booker, typically a shooting guard, filling in the point guard role this season and injuries affecting their depth, Bouyea’s arrival adds much-needed reinforcement. Collin Gillespie and Jordan Goodwin have been handling backup duties, but the team is looking to strengthen that position.

Although Bouyea has not played a significant role in the NBA thus far, he brings with him valuable experience gained through his time with organizations such as the Miami Heat, Washington Wizards, Portland Trail Blazers, San Antonio Spurs, and Milwaukee Bucks. His experience around star players and coaches can be an asset as he joins the Suns.

Many Bucks fans expressed disappointment at Bouyea’s departure, especially after a strong Summer League performance that featured a game-winning shot. While the chances of him making the Bucks’ rotation seemed slim, some felt that keeping him in the G League for further development was a viable option. However, the Bucks opted to give his spot to Alex Antetokounmpo instead.

The Bucks’ decision to waive Bouyea was also influenced by the acquisition of point guard Mark Sears from the undrafted pool. Sears has already made an impression with the team, making him a safer choice for a two-way contract. Despite losing Bouyea, the Bucks still boast several promising point guards in their G League lineup, including former lottery picks Kira Lewis Jr. and Dennis Smith Jr., ensuring depth in that position.

As Jamaree Bouyea embarks on this new chapter with the Phoenix Suns, it remains to be seen how he will leverage this opportunity to secure a larger role than he experienced with the Bucks. His journey in Phoenix could be the fresh start needed to showcase his abilities.
