The Office of the Bougainville Electoral Commissioner (OBEC) has announced the successful conclusion of the 2025 Bougainville General Election, with all 45 parliamentary seats confirmed. During a recent media conference in Buka, Electoral Commissioner Desmond Tsianai shared vital updates, announcing that the final count has been completed and all winning candidates declared.
“This day marks a proud moment for Bougainville,” Tsianai remarked, expressing gratitude for a well-conducted electoral process. He appreciated the peaceful manner in which the elections unfolded throughout the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, thanking all participants including voters, candidates, polling officials, security personnel, and the media for their collective efforts in ensuring transparency and credibility.
Emphasizing the significance of the elections, Tsianai praised the residents of Bougainville for their active engagement and respect for the democratic process. He conveyed a strong message to the electorate and the newly elected representatives, stating, “Your voice has been heard. Your vote has shaped the leadership that will carry us forward.”
For candidates wishing to contest the election outcomes, Tsianai reminded them that petitions can be filed in the courts within one month following the election declaration. This reiteration underscores the importance of safeguarding individual rights within the democratic framework.
Additionally, Tsianai expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts of partners such as the Bougainville Police Service and community leaders in facilitating a fair electoral process. He reaffirmed OBEC’s commitment to promoting transparent and inclusive electoral practices in future elections.
One of the notable outcomes of this election is the election of Delourdes Motsi Semoso as the new Member for the North Bougainville Women’s Regional Seat, having secured an impressive 33,915 votes, surpassing the required majority of 27,863.
This electoral cycle not only emphasizes Bougainville’s commitment to democratic values but also marks a crucial step towards greater autonomy and self-determination. Following significant events like the 2019 vote for independence, the results from this election could catalyze enhanced governance and deeper political engagement in the region.
The Bougainville Electoral Commission plans to return the writs to the Speaker of the House on Monday, October 6, 2025, and will commence post-election reviews aimed at refining future electoral processes. This dedication to continuous improvement affirms the commitment to democratic principles and highlights the importance of citizen involvement in governance, paving the way for a hopeful future in Bougainville.
