The Boston Red Sox are facing challenges in their pursuit of additional offensive talent following the news that infielder Eugenio Suárez has reached an agreement to join the Cincinnati Reds. This comes on the heels of the Red Sox losing a key player when Alex Bregman signed with the Chicago Cubs, leaving Boston in search of ways to enhance its lineup.
Rumors have circulated linking the Red Sox to potential trades for Isaac Paredes and Brendan Donovan, both of whom had impressive All-Star seasons last year. CBS Sports’ Matt Snyder has suggested that the Red Sox could successfully negotiate a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals for Donovan, emphasizing that the Cardinals are in a favorable position to entertain offers from teams looking to strengthen their rosters.
With the Cardinals looking to optimize their roster amid a retooling phase, Snyder noted, “It’s the perfect time for the Cardinals to get the best offer from teams that still need to beef up their position-player side of the roster.” Donovan, who primarily plays at second base, won a utility Gold Glove in his rookie season (2022) and was named an All-Star last year. Despite some defensive struggles, he posted a solid performance at second base, with a plus-two outs above average and an offensive output of a .775 OPS, 10 home runs, and 50 RBIs over the past season.
While the Cardinals are reportedly not eager to trade Donovan, their willingness to listen to strong offers could open the door for a significant acquisition for the Red Sox. Recent trades between the teams, including those involving Sonny Gray and Willson Contreras, suggest that a deal could be in the works if the right prospects or young talents are included on Boston’s end.
In the larger context of baseball, this could signal a shift for the Red Sox, who are in urgent need of bolstering their lineup to remain competitive in the upcoming season. With the right moves, Boston could revive its offensive capabilities and position itself as a contender once again.
