Donnie Wahlberg is back as Danny Reagan in the new offshoot series “Boston Blue,” and he’s expressing hopes for a crossover film uniting the worlds of “Boston Blue” and the long-running series “Blue Bloods.” Wahlberg attended the world premiere of “Boston Blue” at the Cannes, alongside co-star Sonequa Martin-Green, where they participated in a Q&A session moderated by Deadline.
During the discussion, Wahlberg noted the increasing connections between the two series, highlighting the appearance of “Blue Bloods” star Bridget Moynahan and Danny’s son Sean in the opener of “Boston Blue.” He implied that audiences could expect even more crossovers in the future. “There were zero [Blue Bloods] castmates originally in the [Boston Blue] pilot, now they’re creeping in, and they’ll be coming back,” Wahlberg remarked.
The actor, who also serves as an executive producer for “Boston Blue,” shared his visions for the show’s success, stating, “This could lead anywhere,” and dreamt of creating a feature film that brings together the casts of both series. He emphasized the importance of integrating both worlds, saying, “Yes, we want to incorporate [both] worlds as much as possible.”
Reflecting on the legacy of “Blue Bloods,” which ran for 14 seasons and garnered a large international following, Wahlberg expressed his determination to keep the show’s spirit alive, even after fighting to keep it on the air. “Nobody fought harder than me to keep that show on TV, but this show has the opportunity to keep that legacy. Boston Blue is the way to do that. We have characters from Blue Bloods and we’re answering questions that have never been answered before,” he explained.
Wahlberg and Martin-Green were in high spirits at the event, engaging with buyers and the audience, effectively promoting “Boston Blue.” The premiere garnered positive feedback from the MIPCOM crowd, a testament to the show’s potential as it seeks to make a strong impression in the competitive landscape of television distribution. The excitement surrounding “Boston Blue” signals a promising future for fans and may pave the way for new storytelling opportunities in the beloved franchise.
