NEW YORK – CBS is set to expand its procedural drama lineup with the premiere of “Boston Blue,” a spin-off of the popular series “Blue Bloods.” The new show will air in the same time slot, Friday nights at 10 PM, and marks the first time viewers will see Detective Danny Reagan, portrayed by Donnie Wahlberg, adapt to a different city environment as he transitions from the NYPD to the Boston Police Department.
In “Boston Blue,” Reagan partners with Detective Lena Silver, played by Sonequa Martin-Green, who comes from a prominent Boston policing family. Wahlberg expressed initial reservations about taking on a spin-off. However, he quickly changed his mind after reading the script, recognizing the potential to infuse his character with new dynamics.
“I saw the possibilities of weaving the ‘Blue Bloods’ world into it, and I saw a chance to play Danny in a different way,” Wahlberg shared during a post-screening discussion at Paramount’s Manhattan headquarters. He highlighted a significant shift in his character’s narrative; in his new role, Danny must navigate the complexities of having his son, Sean Reagan, in law enforcement as well, dealing with the parental worries he never faced before.
This evolution not only introduces a new partnership and family dynamic but also raises fresh stakes for Danny. Wahlberg noted the intricacies of honoring the original “Blue Bloods” series while ensuring “Boston Blue” stands on its own. He revealed that fans of “Blue Bloods” can expect continuity, particularly concerning Danny’s romantic interest, detective Maria Baez, played by Marisa Ramirez.
The premiere of “Boston Blue” is set for October 17 on CBS and will be available for streaming on Paramount+. With the blend of familiar faces and new storylines, fans can look forward to an exciting chapter in the “Blue Bloods” universe, promising both drama and engaging character development.
