An elite team within the U.S. Border Patrol, known as the Border Patrol Tactical Unit (BORTAC), is gaining recognition for its effectiveness in handling high-profile cases beyond the border. Recently spotlighted for its role in capturing fugitive ex-police chief Grant Hardin, dubbed the “Devil in the Ozarks,” BORTAC’s expertise in navigating rugged terrains has proven invaluable in various searches across the nation.
Former Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Gil Kerlikowske praised BORTAC for employing their skills in rural settings, successfully tracking individuals who have escaped law enforcement. BORTAC’s National Commander, Christopher Voss, indicated that heightened demand for the unit’s assistance stems from their successful missions, showcasing their capability to state and local agencies facing challenging situations.
Over the years, BORTAC has participated in several critical operations, including the pursuit of Pennsylvania prison escapee Danelo Cavalcante in 2023 and assisting during the tragic shooting at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas. As the influx of illegal crossings surged since 2021, the unit has been more active, reflecting a robust operational tempo.
Following the capture of Hardin, the unit was requested in Washington state for the search for Travis Decker, who is suspected of killing his three daughters. Voss noted, “Because of that … people call us and ask us to assist them,” emphasizing the increased caseload as a result of the team’s growing reputation.
BORTAC agents undergo rigorous training to ensure readiness for any situation, maintaining a focus on teamwork and shared objectives with other law enforcement agencies. As Lt. Chris Olivarez remarked on working with BORTAC, the unit is considered a “last resort,” called in when local resources are exhausted, illustrating their integral role in complex operations.
In sum, BORTAC stands out as a highly skilled unit dedicated to mission success, with each operation aiming to enhance community safety. As they continue to respond to various challenges, the commitment of BORTAC to carry out their duties reflects a growing partnership in law enforcement, dedicated to protecting the public.
