Amtrak and state officials celebrated a significant achievement over the Independence Day weekend as the Borealis line, a state-supported train service linking the Twin Cities and Chicago, welcomed its 250,000th passenger. This milestone signifies not just a number but a growing trend toward utilizing train travel as a preferred mode of transportation.
The Borealis line, which commenced operations on May 23, 2024, has exceeded expectations since its launch, with ridership reaching 100,000 within just the first five months. It operates daily under contracts with the transportation departments of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois, providing connections through several stops including Red Wing, Winona, and Milwaukee, before arriving in Chicago.
Amtrak President Roger Harris emphasized the importance of this achievement, stating that many riders are new to Amtrak and highlighting the advantages of train travel over long drives on Interstate 94. Minnesota Transportation Commissioner Nancy Daubenberger reinforced that the 250,000 ridership reflects a strong demand for safe and reliable transportation alternatives in the state.
Wisconsin Transportation Secretary Kristina Boardman echoed this sentiment, confirming the Borealis line’s position as a success story that meets the needs for efficient passenger rail travel. The line has consistently carried about 300 passengers per train in each direction, showcasing its popularity among travelers.
Passengers also benefit from various discounts and can enjoy amenities like regional food offerings and scenic views of the Mississippi River during their journey, enhancing the overall travel experience.
This success not only highlights the increasing interest in rail travel but also suggests a hopeful trend toward expanding and improving transportation options in the Midwest. With positive projections for the Borealis line’s growth, it is a promising development for regional connectivity and environmental sustainability through reduced reliance on road travel.
