2K Games has officially set the price for the much-anticipated Borderlands 4 at $70 for its standard edition, which is now available for preorders. While this price point aligns with many current game releases, it has sparked discussions in light of recent games like Mario Kart World and The Outer Worlds, both set to be priced at $80.
Randy Pitchford, the head of Gearbox, commented that “real fans” would find a way to pay higher prices, hinting at the industry’s shifting economics. Beyond the standard edition, Borderlands 4 will feature several premium options: a $100 deluxe edition with added extras, a $130 Super Deluxe edition, and a $150 Collector’s Edition that does not include a game copy.
The game will also offer extensive post-launch content, including two Story Packs—each featuring a new vault hunter, additional missions, and areas to explore—available to buyers of the Super Deluxe edition. Moreover, four Bounty Packs will introduce new missions and unique boss battles, although specific prices for these expansions have yet to be announced.
Pitchford discussed the fluctuating market during a recent PAX East interview, stating that while some companies are cautious about raising prices, others acknowledge that increasing game budgets and production costs necessitate such adjustments. He disclosed that Borderlands 4 boasts a development budget more than double that of Borderlands 3, emphasizing the need for sales to facilitate future investments in new content.
Interestingly, 2K Games is not adopting a universal pricing model; for instance, Mafia: The Old Country is set to release at a budget-friendly $50 to reach broader audiences. This variation indicates a strategic approach to pricing in a competitive marketplace.
With a scheduled launch date of September 12 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, and a Switch 2 version set for a later date, there’s significant interest in how Borderlands 4 will perform, especially as expectations build around the upcoming release of GTA 6, which is anticipated for 2026.
As the gaming landscape evolves with these financial considerations, it appears that companies are prepared to adapt their strategies to ensure both profitability and accessibility, paving the way for a diverse gaming experience.
