The inaugural Battle of the Netters 2025 (BON2025) showcased a resounding success at the National Netball Centre in Laucala, overcoming various time and resource constraints. After nearly a decade of absence, the inter-district championship returned to Fiji’s netball scene, invigorating the sport’s community and strengthening national ties.
With participation from 11 associations, teams from regions such as Taveuni, Savusavu, Labasa, Tavua, Nanukuloa, and Vatukaloko joined traditional powerhouses like Suva, Nadi, and Lautoka, creating a diverse and competitive tournament atmosphere. Lepani Justice Volahiga, Secretary for BON2025, expressed deep gratitude towards the sponsors who played a pivotal role in the event’s success, underscoring the championship’s significance in honing athletes’ skills and showcasing talent nationwide.
The event drew approximately 645 athletes across various grades and divisions and attracted around 1000 attendees, including officials, coaches, managers, parents, guardians, and supporters. Volahiga highlighted the tournament’s impact on providing a platform for showcasing players’ potential and fostering netball’s growth, particularly in regions beyond the larger associations.
Throughout the competition, Suva teams demonstrated dominance across categories. The Suva Orchids took the Under-15 title, with Suva Makosoi as runners-up. The Under-18 category was claimed by Suva Hibiscus, with Fiji Secondary School following closely. Suva Spartans soared to victory in the Under-23 division, with Nadi as second. In the Open Men’s grade, Suva Warriors prevailed, while Tailevu secured second place, and Suva Lightning triumphed in the Open Women’s division, with Lautoka as runners-up.
BON2025 highlighted Fiji’s enduring passion and enthusiasm for netball, heralding a bright future for the sport within the region. This promising outcome sets a hopeful tone for BON2026, as organizers and participants aim to capitalize on this success, fostering unity and enhancing competitiveness across all districts. The revival of the inter-district championship underscores Fiji’s commitment to cultivating its netball talent and celebrating its resilient sporting spirit.
