Bon Jovi’s iconic hit “Livin’ On a Prayer” has reached a new milestone, racking up two billion plays on Spotify and underscoring the enduring power of the band’s breakthrough anthem.
The track first appeared on the 1986 album Slippery When Wet, and it spent four weeks atop the charts in February 1987. The song, which follows the fictional couple Tommy and Gina as they struggle to keep faith while mounting financial hardship, helped propel Bon Jovi into superstardom. The band’s members were initially cool on the track’s potential. “I remember walking out of the room with Richie and I said, ‘Eh, it’s okay. Maybe we should just put it on a movie soundtrack,’” Jon Bon Jovi recalled. “Richie looked at me and said, ‘You’re an idiot. It’s really good.’ I said, ‘I just don’t know where it’s going.’ But it didn’t have that boom-boom-boom bassline yet, so it sounded more like The Clash.”
The demo version of the song, included as a hidden track on the 2004 box set 100,000,000 Bon Jovi Fans Can’t Be Wrong, was far more subdued than the final version. Desmond Child, who co-wrote the tune, said on a podcast in 2019 that the track had initially been treated as a moody, sensitive piece, and that Jon Bon Jovi’s instincts about its direction toward hard rock and stadium-rock grandeur were pivotal. “The song was so good that Richie Sambora and I literally got on our hands and knees, half-joking, half-serious, and begged him to record it.”
“Livin’ On a Prayer” went on to become Bon Jovi’s second consecutive No. 1 single, following “You Give Love A Bad Name.” The achievement also marked the band as the first hard rock act to top the Hot 100 with back-to-back singles. Earlier this year, the band’s enduring hit “It’s My Life” joined the billion-stream club on Spotify, becoming the third classic Bon Jovi song to reach that milestone after “Livin’ On a Prayer” and “You Give Love a Bad Name.” “It’s My Life” was released as the lead single from the 2000 album Crush.
The two-billion-stream milestone for “Livin’ On a Prayer” adds to a string of streaming successes for Bon Jovi as fans continue to celebrate the band’s music across generations.
