Bollywood is in mourning following the passing of legendary actor Dharmendra, who died at the age of 89 in Mumbai, just days before his 90th birthday. Renowned as the ‘He-Man of Bollywood,’ Dharmendra’s extraordinary career spanned over six decades and included more than 300 films. His health had been in decline since November 1, when he was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital for treatment, but reports indicated he had recently been discharged and was recuperating at home before the news of his passing broke on November 24.

Dharamendra’s death drew condolences from many prominent figures in the film industry, including Amitabh Bachchan’s family, Aamir Khan, and Salman Khan, who all paid their final respects at the Pwan Hans crematorium in Juhu. Filmmaker Karan Johar shared an emotional tribute on social media, calling it “the end of an ERA” and describing Dharmendra as a “massive mega star” and a “bonafide Legend of Indian Cinema.” His heartfelt post highlighted Dharmendra’s incredible warmth and the deep love he fostered among his peers, expressing how his absence would leave an irreplaceable gap in the industry.

The specifics surrounding the cause of his death remain undisclosed, but his last film, directed by Sriram Raghavan and titled ‘Ikkis,’ is set for a release on December 25, 2025, featuring notable talents like Agastya Nanda and Jaideep Ahlawat. Dharmendra’s impressive filmography showcased his versatility as he transitioned seamlessly between romantic leads and rugged action stars, with beloved performances in classics including ‘Sholay,’ where he played the iconic role of Veeru.

Born on December 8, 1935, in Nasrali, Punjab, Dharmendra’s trajectory in cinema began with ‘Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere’ in 1960. He quickly ascended to fame in the mid-1960s through films that showcased both his striking good looks and his ability to engage audiences in comedic and dramatic roles. His talent earned him accolades, including the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award, in 2012.

Dharmendra is survived by his wife Hema Malini, his first spouse Prakash Kaur, and six children, among whom are Bollywood actors Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol. His enduring legacy in Indian cinema will be remembered fondly by fans and colleagues alike, as he leaves behind a cherished place in the hearts of many.
