Boeing has announced significant orders for its large aircraft, revealing a commitment from Japan Airlines and Korean Air during the opening day of the Farnborough International Airshow. The manufacturer disclosed that it has secured orders for up to 80 787 Dreamliner and 777 double-aisle planes, signaling a strong response to competition from Airbus, particularly after Airbus made inroads with these carriers during Boeing’s recent challenges.
Brad McMullen, head of Boeing’s sales operations, expressed satisfaction with Japan Airlines’ decision to continue its partnership by selecting 10 Dreamliners, with the option for an additional 10. Korean Air has also committed to purchasing 20 777-9 models and 20 787-10 planes, with a choice for 10 more 787-10s.
This announcement highlights the competitive landscape, especially in light of recent reports indicating that Airbus sold 11 A321neo jets to Japan Airlines, marking a shift as this was the first time Japan Airlines opted for a single-aisle aircraft from Airbus. Similarly, Airbus secured orders from Korean Air, which is predominantly a Boeing operator, suggesting a strategic move away from Boeing amidst ongoing regulatory challenges for Boeing’s 777X model.
Stephanie Pope, head of Boeing’s commercial airplanes division, remarked on the significance of these orders, noting Boeing’s long-standing relationship with Korean Air and emphasizing the role that the 777X and 787 Dreamliner will play in supporting the airline’s sustainability and growth objectives.
