Boeing’s Bold Move: Major Orders Striking Back at Airbus

Boeing has announced significant orders for its 787 Dreamliner and 777 double-aisle aircraft, securing commitments for up to 80 planes from Japan Airlines and Korean Air. The announcement was made on the first day of the Farnborough International Airshow, an important event in the aviation industry.

Japan Airlines has placed an order for 10 Dreamliners, with the option to acquire 10 additional units. Meanwhile, Korean Air has committed to 20 777-9 models and 20 787-10 planes, with an option for 10 more 787-10s. This move demonstrates Boeing’s intent to reclaim its market position after facing competition from Airbus, which had previously capitalized on Boeing’s challenges, including a scandal involving the 737 Max.

Brad McMullen, head of Boeing’s sales operations, expressed satisfaction in continuing a strong partnership with Japan Airlines, highlighting the airline’s re-selection of the 787 Dreamliner amid efforts to modernize its fleet.

The competitive landscape was influenced by prior sales from Airbus, including its sale of 11 A321neo jets to Japan Airlines, marking a shift as it was the first time the airline purchased a single-aisle aircraft from a manufacturer other than Boeing. Additionally, reports indicated that Airbus made sales of wide-body jets to Korean Air, which primarily operates Boeing aircraft.

Stephanie Pope, head of Boeing’s commercial airplanes division, stated that they are honored by Korean Air’s choice of their widebody airplanes and emphasized Boeing’s long-standing relationship with the airline, which spans 50 years. She noted that the 777X and 787 Dreamliner will play significant roles in supporting the airline’s sustainability and growth objectives.
