Boeing’s Bold Comeback: Major Orders from Japan Airlines and Korean Air

Boeing has announced a significant development, securing orders for up to 80 of its 787 Dreamliner and 777 double-aisle aircraft from Japan Airlines and Korean Air. This announcement comes amid increased competition from Airbus, which had successfully captured market share during the fallout from the Boeing 737 Max issues earlier this year.

Brad McMullen, head of Boeing’s sales operations, expressed appreciation for the ongoing partnership with Japan Airlines, stating, “We value our long-standing partnership with Japan Airlines and are pleased that they have re-selected the 787 Dreamliner as they continue to modernize their world-class fleet.”

These orders were revealed on the opening day of the Farnborough International Airshow, a key event in the aviation industry. Japan Airlines has placed an order for 10 Dreamliners with an option for an additional 10. Meanwhile, Korean Air has committed to purchasing 20 777-9 models and 20 787-10 planes, also with the option for 10 more 787-10s.

This renewed interest from these airlines highlights Boeing’s efforts to reclaim its footing following Airbus’s recent sales. Just a few months prior, it was reported that Airbus sold 11 A321neo jets to Japan Airlines, marking a significant shift as it was the airline’s first purchase of a single-aisle aircraft from a rival manufacturer. Additionally, Airbus secured wide-body jet sales with Korean Air, where Boeing aircraft predominantly populate the fleet. This move raised questions about the competitiveness of the 777x, which is nearing regulatory approval.

Stephanie Pope, head of Boeing’s commercial airplanes division, stated, “We are honored Korean Air has selected our largest, most efficient widebody airplanes to add capacity to its global network.” She emphasized the vital role of Boeing aircraft in Korean Air’s operations over the past 50 years and reiterated that the 777X and 787 Dreamliner will support the airline’s long-term sustainability and growth goals.
