Boeing’s Bold Comeback: Major Orders from Japan Airlines and Korean Air

Boeing has announced significant orders for its 787 Dreamliner and 777 double-aisle aircraft from Japan Airlines and Korean Air. The planemaker revealed on Monday that it secured orders for up to 80 planes in total, marking a strategic comeback after recent setbacks involving its 737 Max model.

Brad McMullen, Boeing’s sales operations head, expressed the company’s appreciation for the ongoing collaboration with Japan Airlines, noting the airline’s decision to continue modernizing its fleet with the 787 Dreamliner. This announcement coincides with the opening of the Farnborough International Airshow, a key event in the aviation industry.

Japan Airlines is set to acquire ten Dreamliners, with an option for ten additional aircraft. Similarly, Korean Air has placed an order for twenty 777-9 models and twenty 787-10 aircraft, along with the option for ten more 787-10s.

This partnership comes after Airbus made inroads with both airlines last March, selling 11 A321neo jets to Japan Airlines and several wide-body jets to Korean Air, diversifying their fleets away from Boeing amid ongoing challenges facing the 737 Max program.

Stephanie Pope, head of Boeing’s commercial airplanes division, highlighted the long-standing relationship with Korean Air, stating that the selected aircraft will contribute to the airline’s sustainability and growth objectives in the future.
