Boeing has recently reported significant orders for its large aircraft, revealing a strong recovery in demand. On Monday, the manufacturer announced it has secured orders for up to 80 of its iconic 787 Dreamliner and 777 double-aisle planes from Japan Airlines and Korean Air. This development signals Boeing’s determination to rebound after losing ground to Airbus amid a previous setback involving the 737 Max.
Boeing’s sales operations leader, Brad McMullen, expressed appreciation for the enduring collaboration with Japan Airlines, stating, “We value our long-standing partnership with Japan Airlines and are pleased that they have re-selected the 787 Dreamliner as they continue to modernize their world-class fleet.” This announcement coincided with the start of the Farnborough International Airshow, a key event in the aviation industry.
Japan Airlines has placed an order for 10 Dreamliners with an option for an additional 10, while Korean Air has committed to 20 of the new 777-9 models and 20 787-10 planes, also with an option for 10 more 787-10s.
This ongoing partnership comes after a report revealed Airbus sold 11 A321neo jets to Japan Airlines earlier this year, marking the airline’s first acquisition of a single-aisle jet from a competitor. Failures with the 737 Max had allowed Airbus to gain traction in the market.
Additionally, reports have indicated that Airbus made sales of wide-body jets to Korean Air, suggesting a strategic shift as they explored options outside of Boeing, particularly as the 777X awaits regulatory approval.
Stephanie Pope, head of Boeing’s commercial airplanes division, commented on the Korean Air deal, stating, “We are honored Korean Air has selected our largest, most efficient widebody airplanes to add capacity to its global network… The 777X and 787 Dreamliner will continue to support the airline’s long-term goals for sustainability and continued growth.”
In summary, Boeing’s recent orders reflect a resurgence in its market presence and commitment to its partners as it works to reclaim shares lost during turbulent times. Their focus on sustainability and efficiency aligns with the industry’s ongoing evolution, promising a brighter future for both Boeing and its clients. This positive momentum not only strengthens their business relationships but also showcases a hopeful direction for the aerospace sector as a whole.
