Boeing’s Big Comeback: Major Airline Orders Spark Excitement at Farnborough

Boeing has announced significant orders for its 787 Dreamliner and 777 double-aisle planes, securing commitments for up to 80 aircraft from Japan Airlines and Korean Air. This announcement was made on Monday, coinciding with the start of the Farnborough International Airshow, a key event in the aviation industry.

Japan Airlines has committed to acquiring 10 Dreamliners with an option for an additional 10, while Korean Air has ordered 20 models of the 777-9 and 20 of the 787-10, also with options for 10 more 787-10s. This increase in orders comes after Airbus had previously gained traction with these airlines during Boeing’s challenges earlier in the year, particularly following issues with the 737 Max.

Brad McMullen, head of Boeing’s sales operations, emphasized the importance of the partnership with Japan Airlines, expressing satisfaction that the airline has opted to continue modernizing its fleet with the Dreamliner.

Boeing’s recent success contrasts with previous reports, including one from March, where Japan Airlines made its first purchase of a single-aisle aircraft from Airbus, acquiring 11 A321neo jets amidst Boeing’s production uncertainties. Similarly, it was reported that Korean Air had also made wide-body aircraft purchases from Airbus, potentially signaling a shift in preference away from Boeing’s offerings.

Stephanie Pope, head of Boeing’s commercial airplanes division, expressed appreciation for Korean Air’s order, highlighting the long-standing relationship between the airline and Boeing, and noting that the 777X and 787 Dreamliner will support Korean Air’s future sustainability and growth objectives.
