Boeing’s Bid to Reclaim the Skies: Major Airline Orders Announced!

Boeing has made headlines with significant orders for its largest aircraft, announcing on Monday that it has secured commitments for up to 80 units of its 787 Dreamliner and 777 double-aisle planes from Japan Airlines and Korean Air. These orders come after Airbus had made inroads with these airlines following the January incident involving the Boeing 737 Max, signaling that Boeing is striving to reclaim its position in the market.

Brad McMullen, head of Boeing’s sales operations, expressed gratitude for Japan Airlines’ continued partnership and their decision to reselect the 787 Dreamliner as they modernize their fleet. This announcement coincides with the opening day of the Farnborough International Airshow, a key event in the aviation industry.

Japan Airlines has committed to purchasing 10 Dreamliners with the option for an additional 10, while Korean Air has ordered 20 777-9 models and 20 787-10 planes, along with the option for 10 more 787-10s.

The reference to a “long-standing partnership” is notable in light of a recent report indicating that Airbus had sold 11 A321neo jets to Japan Airlines—its first single-aisle acquisition from a manufacturer other than Boeing. This order emerged during a tumultuous period for Boeing, with the 737 Max facing scrutiny and production setbacks.

Similarly, reports indicated that Airbus had sold multiple wide-body jets to Korean Air, which predominantly operates Boeing aircraft. This move has been interpreted as a rejection of the 777X model, which is just beginning to approach regulatory approval.

Stephanie Pope, head of Boeing’s commercial airplane division, expressed her honor in Korean Air’s selection of Boeing’s largest and most efficient widebody airplanes to strengthen its global network, highlighting the long-lasting relationship between the two companies that spans over 50 years. She emphasized that both the 777X and 787 Dreamliner will play a crucial role in supporting Korean Air’s sustainability goals and future growth.
