Boeing Takes Flight at Farnborough with Major Aircraft Orders

Boeing has announced significant orders for its 787 Dreamliner and 777 double-aisle planes from Japan Airlines and Korean Air. On Monday, the company revealed it had secured orders for up to 80 aircraft, signaling its response to recent competitive moves by rival Airbus, which had gained ground during the fallout from the 737 Max incident earlier this year.

“We value our long-standing partnership with Japan Airlines and are pleased that they have re-selected the 787 Dreamliner as they continue to modernize their world-class fleet,” said Brad McMullen, head of Boeing’s sales operations.

This announcement coincides with the opening day of the Farnborough International Airshow, a key event for the aerospace industry. Japan Airlines has committed to acquiring 10 Dreamliners, with an option for an additional 10, while Korean Air has ordered 20 of the 777-9 models and 20 787-10 planes, also with an option for 10 more 787-10s.

The reference to a “long-standing partnership” is significant in light of a recent report indicating that Airbus had sold 11 A321neo jets to Japan Airlines, marking the airline’s first purchase of a single-aisle aircraft from a manufacturer other than Boeing. The A321neo poses direct competition to the 737 Max, which has been embroiled in controversy and production challenges.

Additionally, reports emerged that Airbus had sold several wide-body jets to Korean Air, which predominantly operates Boeing aircraft. This sale was viewed as a potential setback for the Boeing 777X, which is just nearing regulatory approval.

“We are honored Korean Air has selected our largest, most efficient widebody airplanes to add capacity to its global network,” stated Stephanie Pope, head of Boeing’s commercial airplanes division. “Boeing airplanes have played an integral role with Korean Air over the past 50 years, and the 777X and 787 Dreamliner will continue to support the airline’s long-term goals for sustainability and continued growth.”
