Boeing Strikes Big with Japanese and Korean Airlines as Airshow Unfolds

Boeing has announced significant orders for its 787 Dreamliner and 777 double-aisle aircraft from Japan Airlines and Korean Air. The aerospace company reported on Monday that it has secured commitments for up to 80 planes, signaling its intent to reclaim market share after recent incursions by Airbus following issues with the 737 Max.

Brad McMullen, the head of Boeing’s sales operations, expressed satisfaction with Japan Airlines’ decision to continue their partnership by selecting an additional 10 Dreamliners, with the option for 10 more. Korean Air has ordered 20 777-9 models and 20 787-10 planes, also with an option for 10 additional 787-10s.

This announcement coincides with the start of the Farnborough International Airshow, a significant event in the aviation industry. The orders come after a report indicating that Japan Airlines had purchased 11 A321neo jets from Airbus, marking a departure from its usual preference for Boeing’s single-aisle planes. Similarly, Korean Air’s recent move to procure several wide-body jets from Airbus, despite its predominantly Boeing fleet, was seen as a slight against the 777x, which is nearing regulatory approval.

Stephanie Pope, head of Boeing’s commercial airplanes division, stated that the company is honored by Korean Air’s decision to select its newest, most efficient aircraft to enhance its global services. The 777X and 787 Dreamliner are expected to play a crucial role in supporting the airline’s sustainability and growth objectives over the coming years.
