Boeing Scores Big with New Orders Amid Airbus Rivalry

Boeing has announced significant orders for its 787 Dreamliner and 777 double-aisle aircraft, securing up to 80 orders from Japan Airlines and Korean Air. This announcement comes as the company aims to recover from recent setbacks, including competition from Airbus that arose after an issue with its 737 Max planes earlier this year.

Brad McMullen, head of Boeing’s sales operations, expressed appreciation for the partnership with Japan Airlines, noting the airline’s decision to continue modernization efforts with the Dreamliner. The announcement coincides with the commencement of the Farnborough International Airshow, a key event in the aviation industry.

Japan Airlines plans to acquire 10 Dreamliners, with an option for an additional 10. Meanwhile, Korean Air has ordered twenty 777-9 models and twenty 787-10 planes, also with an option for 10 more 787-10s.

This development follows earlier reports indicating that Airbus had made inroads into Japan Airlines with the sale of 11 A321neo jets, marking a shift away from exclusively purchasing Boeing single-aisle aircraft. Additionally, Airbus secured orders for wide-body jets from Korean Air, which predominantly operates Boeing aircraft.

Stephanie Pope, head of Boeing’s commercial airplanes division, expressed gratitude towards Korean Air for selecting Boeing’s latest models to enhance its global operations, emphasizing the enduring partnership spanning 50 years and the commitment to sustainability and growth through the 777X and 787 Dreamliner.
