Boeing has secured two significant contracts from the U.S. Army, totaling $461 million, for the production of nine additional CH-47F Block II Chinook helicopters as part of Lots 4 and 5. This latest deal elevates the total number of Chinooks under contract to 18, enhancing the Army’s heavy-lift capabilities.
In a prior agreement established in December 2024, Boeing received a $135 million contract to construct and deliver three additional CH-47F Block II helicopters, further demonstrating the Army’s commitment to bolstering its aerial support with modernized technology.
The CH-47F Chinook’s significance to the Army is underscored by Heather McBryan, vice president and program manager of Cargo Programs at Boeing’s defense, space, and security sector. She remarked that the swift succession of contracts reflects the Chinook’s critical role in the Army’s operational strategy, particularly in challenging logistics environments. McBryan emphasized the importance of the relationship with the Army and the support from Congress as they continue to enhance these capabilities for soldiers in the field.
These new contracts follow the Army’s Rapid Fielding production decision, which facilitates the acquisition of Chinook Block II aircraft for fiscal years 2025 and 2026. The Army intends to deploy these advanced helicopters to two combat brigades, effectively modernizing its heavy-lift fleet for future operations.
The upgraded CH-47F Block II helicopters promise enhanced performance through several key improvements. With advancements in the drivetrain and airframe, the maximum gross weight of the aircraft has increased by 4,000 pounds. Further enhancements to the fuel system and overall sustainment are designed to ensure the Chinook’s operational readiness for the next four decades, thereby reinforcing its status as an integral asset for the Army.
