Bobby Hurley is facing significant pressure as head coach of the Arizona State Sun Devils, especially given the program’s recent struggles on the court. Now in his eleventh season, Hurley has a contract extension that extends through June 30, 2026, which was first announced following the Sun Devils’ First Four victory over Nevada and the first-round NCAA Tournament loss to TCU in March 2023. This extension was finalized as ASU transitioned from the Pac-12 to the Big 12 and adjusted to leadership changes in the athletic department after former athletic director Ray Anderson resigned.
Regarding Hurley’s buyout terms, should Arizona State decide to terminate his contract without cause, they would owe him 100% of his remaining guaranteed salary until June 2026. As of early 2025, the buyout amount is approximately $3.6 million, which includes his base salary and retention bonuses. Notably, the contract does not include a mitigation clause, allowing Hurley to receive the full payout even if he finds another coaching position immediately. Payments under this contract are structured with 35% due upfront and the remainder distributed through payroll.
Since Hurley’s arrival in Tempe in 2015, he has maintained a record of 178 wins and 160 losses. However, the 2022-23 season marked the last time the team made an NCAA Tournament appearance, and the Sun Devils have not achieved 14 wins in a season since then.
Under the terms of his recent contract extension, Hurley’s base salary increased from $2.6 million to $2.8 million on July 1, 2023, with scheduled annual raises of $100,000 through the duration of the contract. His total annual compensation could reach nearly $3 million when potential bonuses are factored in. The contract features performance-based incentives up to $425,000 per year, linked to postseason success and conference achievements. Significant retention bonuses are also outlined, which include $500,000 due on January 1, 2024, and another $600,000 payable on January 1, 2026. These figures will play a crucial role if ASU chooses to pursue a coaching change before the contract’s expiration.
As Bobby Hurley navigates this pivotal time in his coaching career, all eyes will be on the Sun Devils to see how they perform in the coming seasons. The potential for growth and improvement remains, promising an exciting trajectory for the program.
