Bob Stoops has officially announced his retirement from coaching, marking the end of his tenure with the United Football League’s Dallas Renegades after four seasons. The former Oklahoma University football coach shared his decision on Monday, expressing deep gratitude for his experiences in the sport.
In his statement, Stoops remarked, “After much thought and reflection, I’ve made the decision to retire from coaching and step away from the game of football. Coaching has been one of the greatest honors of my life, and closing this chapter comes with lots of gratitude.” He thanked the United Football League, the Dallas Renegades, and everyone who joined him on this journey, underscoring his appreciation for the fans whose support he cherished throughout his career.
Stoops compiled an impressive coaching record, leading the Renegades to the XFL championship in 2023 and accumulating an overall coaching record of 207-69. He spent 18 seasons at Oklahoma, winning 10 Big 12 titles and securing a BCS national championship before briefly returning to lead the Sooners as interim coach during the 2021 Alamo Bowl after Lincoln Riley’s departure to USC.
Russ Brandon, President & CEO of the UFL, praised Stoops for his contributions to the league, stating, “Bob is a true legend in the game of football but an even better person. We are grateful to Bob for his help in building the foundation of our League and Spring Football.”
