BlueSky’s Surge: Can It Handle the Rush from X Users?

BlueSky is currently facing technical difficulties as it navigates a surge in users following an influx of signups from those leaving X, previously known as Twitter. These problems arose after Elon Musk, the owner of X, announced a controversial modification to the platform’s “block” feature, which had previously allowed users to conceal their profiles from specific accounts. Under the new update, this function will no longer serve its prior purpose.

In response to the changes on X, BlueSky reported gaining over 100,000 new signups within a mere 12-hour span. However, many of the new users are encountering challenges with logging in and accessing the platform. Earlier on Thursday, BlueSky’s official account welcomed the new users but later, numerous individuals began reporting connectivity issues on the tracking website Down Detector.

After the changes to the block feature on X, BlueSky emphasized its commitment to online safety through a message on its official account. They reinforced that users have the ability to block others according to their preferences, aiming to customize their experience.

Elon Musk has criticized the existing functionality of the block button as illogical and has argued that the update was overdue, even suggesting the potential removal of the feature altogether. However, critics argue that this change may jeopardize the safety of vulnerable users on the platform. One user highlighted the importance of the block feature for women to prevent harassment, stating that the change could leave them more exposed to unwanted attention.
