The St. Louis Blues have put veteran defenseman Nick Leddy on standard waivers, according to reports from Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman. At 34 years old, Leddy is unable to be bought out following the closure of the first buyout window. His placement on standard waivers indicates that the team is exploring potential trade offers rather than considering a contract termination.
Leddy signed a four-year, $16 million extension with the Blues in 2022, which appeared to be a reasonable deal until the previous season where he faced significant challenges. After sustaining a lower-body injury, he missed more than half of the season and recorded just five points with a plus-six rating across 31 games, averaging 18:40 in ice time—well below his usual 20-plus-minute average per game prior to his injury.
The Blues have been actively looking for a trade partner for Leddy to allow him more ice time this season, but have not yet received any offers. Any of the 31 other NHL teams can claim him within the next 24 hours, including those on his no-trade list.
If Leddy clears waivers, his future with the Blues may lead to an AHL assignment, where he would still receive his $3 million guaranteed salary for the next season. Alternatively, he could seek a mutual termination of his contract, giving up his guaranteed salary but allowing him to explore NHL opportunities elsewhere.
Leddy has had a notable career, amassing 75 goals and 341 assists for a total of 416 points in 1,042 games played with the Blues, Blackhawks, Islanders, and Red Wings. The Blues seem committed to a younger roster, having also opted not to re-sign veteran Ryan Suter, and are focusing on providing more chances for younger players, including Logan Mailloux, Matthew Kessel, and Tyler Tucker.
This move could be seen as a strategic step for the Blues as they transition to a youth movement, potentially reshaping their defense and freeing up cap space for future acquisitions.
