Bobby Whitlock, co-founder of the renowned blues rock band Derek and the Dominos, has passed away at the age of 77. His manager, Carol Kaye, confirmed that he died at home in Texas on Sunday morning after battling cancer.

Whitlock’s wife, Coco Carmel Whitlock, shared a heartfelt statement, capturing his extraordinary journey from humble beginnings in the South to achieving remarkable success in music. She described him as a guiding light in her life, filling their shared experiences with music, poetry, and art.

Born on March 18, 1948, in Memphis, Tennessee, Whitlock began his musical career with notable acts such as Sam & Dave and Booker T. & the M.G.’s. He became a member of Delaney & Bonnie in 1968, where he would meet future bandmates Eric Clapton, Carl Radle, and Jim Gordon.

The formation of Derek and the Dominos in 1970 was pivotal in rock history, especially with the legendary album “Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs.” The title track “Layla” is celebrated as one of Clapton’s greatest musical achievements. The band briefly toured, featuring Elton John as their opening act.

Whitlock reflected on the challenges that led to the band’s breakup in a 2017 interview, citing personal conflicts and struggles with substance abuse among the members during that period.

In his later years, Whitlock pursued a solo career, releasing several albums, including collaborations with Coco. He also ventured into painting, sharing his artwork on social media. His contributions to music were recognized posthumously when he was inducted into the Beale Street Walk of Fame in 2024.

He is survived by his wife, children Ashley Brown, Beau Whitlock, and Tim Whitlock Kelly, as well as his sister Debbie Wade. Whitlock’s legacy as a passionate musician and artist continues to resonate with fans around the world. His dedication to creativity and exploration of various art forms is a testament to his vibrant spirit.
