Though several top relievers, such as Edwin Diaz and Devin Williams, have already signed with other teams, there are still promising candidates available. MLB insider Jorge Castillo has reported that the Blue Jays have expressed interest in Pete Fairbanks, the closer for the Tampa Bay Rays, this offseason.
Castillo noted in his ESPN report that Fairbanks, 31, is garnering attention from multiple clubs, including the Miami Marlins and the Blue Jays. Last season, Fairbanks delivered an impressive performance, recording a 2.83 ERA over 61 appearances. He became a free agent when the Rays opted not to exercise his $11 million option in a cost-cutting move. While his history of injuries may raise some concerns, he is anticipated to secure a two- or three-year contract.
With 27 saves last season and a track record of at least 20 saves each year for the past three seasons, Fairbanks would significantly bolster Toronto’s bullpen. Interestingly, the Blue Jays might not need to utilize Fairbanks solely as a closer. If they are able to bring him onboard along with another high-caliber reliever, such as Robert Suarez, they could create a versatile bullpen that adapts based on matchups and usage demands.
According to Spotrac, Fairbanks is projected to command a three-year deal worth approximately $43.9 million, which breaks down to an average annual value of $14.6 million. This figure is considered manageable for the Blue Jays, who are expected to invest heavily this offseason in their pursuit to build a competitive roster.
Additionally, Fairbanks has extensive experience pitching in the American League East and is familiar with the challenges of high-pressure venues like Yankee Stadium and Fenway Park, having pitched at Rogers Centre as well.
Securing Fairbanks would not only strengthen the Blue Jays’ bullpen but also enhance their overall competitiveness heading into the next season. The team appears poised for an aggressive offseason, with the goal of making a significant impact in the coming year.
