Blue Jays Bracing for ALDS as Bichette’s Return Remains in Question

The Toronto Blue Jays celebrated their AL East victory, allowing them to bypass the wild card round and take a much-needed break before the American League Division Series (ALDS) kicks off on Saturday. This extended respite generated some hope regarding the potential return of star shortstop Bo Bichette, who has been sidelined since September 6 due to a left PCL sprain. However, current assessments suggest that he may not be ready for the postseason.

Blue Jays manager John Schneider addressed the media, confirming that Bichette has yet to begin running as part of his rehabilitation process. Although Schneider and General Manager Ross Atkins expressed cautious optimism about Bichette’s status, the reality is that without the ability to run, it is improbable that he could occupy a spot on the roster, whether for shortstop duties or as a designated hitter. Notably, even a limited role would complicate roster flexibility, raising concerns about filling a critical position with someone struggling to perform at full capacity.

A final decision on Bichette’s availability is expected tomorrow, with the official ALDS roster announcement due on Saturday morning. There is speculation that the team may be engaging in some gamesmanship to avoid revealing too much about Bichette to the advance scouts from the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees. Should the Blue Jays progress further in the playoffs, questions remain about whether Bichette could return for the American League Championship Series as well.

Bichette’s impressive comeback season was crucial to the Blue Jays’ success, highlighted by a .311 batting average, 18 home runs, and a 134 wRC+ that placed him among the top hitters in baseball. His presence, even in a limited capacity, could significantly benefit the Jays’ lineup; however, the uncertainty surrounding his health continues to cast a shadow over the team’s postseason aspirations.

On a brighter note, right-hander Chris Bassitt is set to pitch multiple innings during an intrasquad game today, marking an essential step toward his inclusion on the ALDS roster. Bassitt, who has been out since September 18 due to lower back inflammation, is expected to return just in time for the playoffs, adding depth to the Jays’ pitching plans alongside Kevin Gausman and Shane Bieber in starting roles.

Sadly, Jose Berrios will not be part of the ALDS roster, having been placed on the 15-day injured list due to elbow inflammation after initial scans showed no structural damage. While the Blue Jays had planned to transition Berrios into a bullpen role prior to his injury, his absence poses another challenge for the team.

In an encouraging update, first baseman Ty France is reportedly “feeling better” and making progress after an IL stint for oblique inflammation. Although it remains uncertain if he will join the team in time for the ALDS, France’s right-handed bat could prove particularly advantageous against the left-handed pitching of Boston and New York should he be available.

As the Blue Jays prepare for the postseason, the hope remains that they can navigate through these injury challenges and capitalize on their strengths to make a deep playoff run.
