Blue Jays Activate Santander, DFA Alek Manoah Amid Late-Season Shuffle

The Toronto Blue Jays have made significant roster changes as they activated Anthony Santander from the 60-day injured list, while designating former All-Star pitcher Alek Manoah for assignment. These moves were necessitated after Toronto placed first baseman Ty France on the 10-day injured list due to left oblique inflammation. These adjustments occurred just before the Blue Jays faced a 4-1 loss to the Boston Red Sox at Rogers Centre.

Santander, who was signed on a substantial five-year, $92.5 million contract during the offseason, has been absent since May 29 due to a left shoulder injury. Despite a slow start this season, batting .179 with six home runs in 50 games, his return is timely as the Blue Jays are pursuing the AL East title with a record of 90-66. Santander’s previous season with the Baltimore Orioles was marked by career-high achievements, including 44 home runs, 102 RBIs, and participation in the AL All-Star team.

On the other hand, Alek Manoah, who had been on the path to recovery following elbow surgery in 2024, was designated for assignment. Manoah had shown promise in Triple-A Buffalo with a 2.97 ERA over seven starts, yet struggled in the major leagues this season. Despite a stellar performance in 2022, which saw him finish third in AL Cy Young voting, his performance declined dramatically in 2023, leading to multiple demotions and a season-ending decision by the Blue Jays.

While these shifts come at a crucial juncture, Toronto remains focused on their playoff ambitions and the pursuit of the division title. As the regular season nears its conclusion, the Blue Jays hope that Santander’s activation will bolster their lineup and contribute to their postseason aspirations.
