Travelers planning to fly to or from Boston’s Logan Airport in the upcoming days are facing significant disruptions due to a blizzard hitting Massachusetts. The severe weather has led to the cancellation of hundreds of flights, making travel plans more complicated for many.

On Monday, nearly 1,000 flights were canceled at Logan, with an additional 450 cancellations reported early Tuesday, according to FlightAware. Interim Massport CEO Ed Freni indicated to WBZ-TV that while airport crews have managed to keep one runway operational, the lack of demand for flights due to cancellations has rendered this effort largely ineffective.

Freni noted the challenging weather conditions, stating, “With tons of snow out there,” the aim is to have two runways open by Tuesday. However, he warned that it could take an additional day for the airport to resume normal operations.

“We will probably bring a slightly smaller schedule back together Tuesday morning as we ramp up to try to bring a full schedule by Wednesday,” Freni explained. He added that although international flights from Boston are expected to return to schedule by Tuesday afternoon and evening, it may take longer for domestic flights to stabilize.

The blizzard’s impact is also being felt in the New York area and other major hubs across the Northeast, which further complicates recovery efforts. “It’s going to be slow. It’s going to take time because it’s impacting some big hubs throughout the country,” Freni remarked.

Travelers are advised to check with their airlines about flight status before heading to the airport, as the situation remains fluid.
