Black Myth: Wukong, the debut installment of the anticipated Black Myth video game series, has officially launched on PlayStation 5 and PC.
Inspired by the classic Chinese novel “Journey to the West,” the game follows the protagonist, known as the Destined One, who is a monkey character modeled after the legendary Sun Wukong from the novel. This action role-playing game features six chapters that narrate the Destined One’s quest to recover lost relics.
The game delves into profound themes such as enduring regret, sacrifice, the molding of fate, and the pursuit of redemption by both heroes and villains.
Regarding its release, Black Myth: Wukong premiered on August 20, 2024, for PlayStation 5 and PC. However, it is currently unavailable on Xbox, although it is confirmed to be coming to the platform in the future, with the release date yet to be announced.
Players who preordered the game will receive a special bonus item, the Trailblazer’s Scarlet Gourd, once they reach a respawn point at the Keeper’s Shrine. For those who did not preorder, this item can still be obtained by progressing through the game.
The game’s duration varies based on playstyle. The main storyline takes about 20-25 hours to complete, with a regular playthrough estimated at 30-35 hours. Completionists can expect to invest 40-50+ hours to achieve 100% completion.
Critics have offered mixed reviews of Black Myth: Wukong. Some highlight the game’s captivating boss battles, while others mention a lack of depth in gameplay. Positive reviews commend its unique cast of characters and engaging combat, emphasizing the game’s beautiful world despite some technical issues. It appears to resonate well with fans of action games, particularly those familiar with the Soulslike genre.
