Bindi Irwin recently reminisced about her memorable experiences on Dancing with the Stars alongside her partner Derek Hough, as she presented him with the Innovator Award at the 2025 Dancers Against Cancer Gala of the Stars in Los Angeles. The 27-year-old wildlife conservationist expressed her admiration for Hough, calling him one of the most remarkable individuals she has ever come across and predicting he will be “the most wonderful dad,” as he and his wife Hayley Erbert are expecting their first child.
Reflecting on their journey, Bindi shared how she first met Derek a decade ago when they won season 21 of the show together. She recalled her complete lack of dance experience at the time, humorously comparing her initial attempts to dance to a baby giraffe learning to walk. “I had absolutely no dance experience. I had never even worn high-heeled shoes,” she said, remembering how challenging and awkward it was. However, she credited Derek’s kindness, determination, and exceptional teaching skills for their triumph, which culminated in them taking home the coveted mirrorball trophy.
Bindi emphasized Hough’s deserving nature for the Innovator Award, praising his relentless pursuit of excellence, his impact on younger performers, and his unwavering belief in dance’s power to heal and bring people together. Hough recently announced his pregnancy news on Instagram, which prompted Irwin to extend her congratulations, saying, “Congratulations!!!!! Hugs from our entire family,” along with a heart emoji.
This heartfelt recognition highlights not only Bindi’s growth and experiences in dance but also the enduring bond between her and Derek, showcasing the profound impact that dance can have on relationships and personal development.
