Billy Gardell is sharing his transformative journey towards better health, attributing a significant part of his 170-pound weight loss to a vital shift in his eating habits. The actor, well-known for his role in “Mike & Molly,” faced serious health challenges, including a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes and a weight that had ballooned to nearly 380 pounds by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
Recognizing the urgency of his situation, Gardell made a life-changing decision to undergo bariatric surgery in July 2021. However, he understood that surgery alone wouldn’t suffice; he needed to redefine his relationship with food. “Food is fuel,” he emphasized, reflecting on his previous reliance on comfort eating. This new perspective allowed him to move past the emotional attachments to food and view it purely as nourishment.
To facilitate these changes, Gardell partnered with nutritionist Teri Hlubik, who guided him towards healthier food choices. He made a commitment to replace junk foods with nutrient-dense options while establishing consistent eating patterns. His daily routine now includes a turkey sausage breakfast sandwich, snacking on cottage cheese and fruit, and enjoying a light dinner that avoids fried and sugary foods. Additionally, he prioritizes hydration, consuming 75 ounces of water daily, along with multivitamins, fish oil supplements, and probiotics.
What’s noteworthy is Gardell’s balanced approach to indulgences. He allows himself the occasional treat, like savoring a bite of cake at celebrations, highlighting the importance of moderation in his journey.
Incorporating regular exercise into his routine, Gardell works out three to four times a week. He humorously likens his disciplined schedule to “living in ‘Groundhog Day,’” yet believes that the results are well worth the effort. He acknowledges that perfection is unattainable, stating, “You’re never going to do it perfectly, but if you’re doing it eight out of 10 times, you’re going to win the battle.”
Gardell, now comfortably maintaining a weight between 210 and 215 pounds, reflects that his weight loss has led to remarkable improvements in his health. “My diabetes is gone,” he shares, noting an increase in strength and energy. Embracing his new lifestyle has opened opportunities for new activities, such as surfing and horseback riding, which he previously couldn’t consider.
The actor recalls simple joys that come with his transformation, like being able to fit in a middle seat on an airplane or buy clothes off the rack. Gardell’s journey serves as an inspiring reminder that positive change is possible with determination and the right mindset. His story not only emphasizes the importance of health but also illustrates how a supportive network and personal commitment can lead to life-altering results.
