Orchard Park, N.Y. — The Buffalo Bills are considering activating rookie cornerback Max Hairston off injured reserve ahead of this Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers. Coach Sean McDermott indicated that while it is still early in Hairston’s recovery, the team is optimistic about his potential return.
Hairston has been out since late July due to a knee injury initially feared to be an ACL tear but ultimately diagnosed as a knee sprain. This fortunate turn of events has given the 22-year-old cornerback a chance to return sooner than anticipated. “When I found out that it was something that could be healed without surgery, I didn’t complain,” Hairston shared, viewing his situation as a “blessing in disguise.”
Having returned to practice earlier this week as a limited participant, Hairston is ramping up his activity in hopes of making the 53-man roster. The NFL allows a 21-day practice window for players on injured reserve to prepare for their return, during which they can be evaluated for activation. McDermott emphasized the importance of managing expectations as they navigate Hairston’s recovery, noting that while he’s a first-round pick, he has missed significant time.
Despite being sidelined, Hairston remained engaged, taking mental reps to prepare himself for when he would return. “I just took it as a way to be better, to learn the playbook, and understand how my teammates react in certain situations against opposing players,” he explained.
Hairston expressed enthusiasm about his return to practice, stating, “It feels good… I just had a whole bunch of fun just running out there, thudding, working technique with my teammates.” His commitment to both mental and physical preparation positions him for a potentially significant impact on a cornerback unit that has faced challenges this season.
