PITTSFORD, N.Y. — The Buffalo Bills seem to be at a crossroads with their star running back James Cook as the 2025 season approaches. After a solid start to training camp, with Cook actively participating in the first eight practices, tensions have surfaced regarding his contract status as he enters free agency at the end of this season.
The running back has expressed a desire for a new deal, eyeing a salary around $15 million per season. Despite this, no agreement has been reached, leading to Cook’s unexpected absence during Sunday’s practice. The Bills did not disclose the reason for his absence, simply stating “no comment.” When approached by reporters, Cook mentioned that the matter is strictly “business,” indicating a possible hold-in situation, a notable shift from his previous statements where he emphasized participation in training camp.
Earlier this camp, Cook mentioned he would continue to participate to avoid fines, and though he aspires to remain with the Bills long-term, comments about his value and future have raised eyebrows. “I mean, however it happens, it’s going to get done. Wherever it happens,” he previously stated, asserting his worth and indicating that negotiations might be ongoing.
In terms of his performance, Cook had a breakout year in 2024, matching the franchise record for rushing touchdowns in a season with 16 and exceeding 1,000 rushing yards. However, questions remain about his limited involvement in certain situations, like passing downs. He had emphasized this aspect at camp, stating his intention to take on more roles within the passing game.
General Manager Brandon Beane has addressed the situation, emphasizing the importance of balancing cash and salary cap considerations while expressing his desire to keep Cook on the team. The Bills have successfully extended contracts for four other players in a similar position this offseason, making the current situation somewhat delicate as Cook’s contract negotiations continue.
Compounding the team’s challenges, the Bills are also dealing with injuries among their receiving corps. Khalil Shakir, the leading receiver from 2024, has sustained a high ankle sprain, and head coach Sean McDermott reported that his recovery is being monitored on a “week-to-week” basis. With other key receivers like Joshua Palmer and Curtis Samuel also sidelined, the Bills face uncertainty ahead of the upcoming season opener against the Baltimore Ravens, being just over a month away.
As the Bills continue training camp, the hope remains that both Cook and Shakir can resolve their respective issues swiftly to contribute to the team’s success this season. The next practices at St. John Fisher University will be pivotal for the team as they look to overcome these hurdles and solidify their roster for the season ahead.
