The Buffalo Bills have made a significant move by re-signing quarterback Shane Buechele and wide receiver Jalen Virgil, both of whom are returning to the team after previous tenures.
Shane Buechele first joined the Bills in August 2023 as part of the practice squad, after being waived by the Kansas City Chiefs. Although he re-upped for the 2024 season, his campaign was cut short by a neck injury that placed him on injured reserve. Following the 2025 preseason, he was released but returned to the Bills’ practice squad until the Chiefs picked him up due to injuries to their quarterbacks. He was released again in January and subsequently re-signed with the Bills’ practice squad.
Buechele showcased his potential during training camp and the preseason, completing an impressive 36 of 46 passes for 380 yards and a touchdown over three games, maintaining an unblemished interception record. With Mitch Trubisky currently a free agent and Josh Allen as the only quarterback under contract, re-signing Buechele was essential to solidifying the team’s quarterback depth heading into the offseason.
Jalen Virgil, who previously spent time on the Bills’ practice squad in 2024, was promoted to the active roster in November before being released in mid-December. Over his brief stint, he played in seven games, contributing 111 snaps on offense and 194 on special teams. After being waived in August 2025 due to an injury, he spent time on the Arizona Cardinals’ practice squad in November.
With Tyrell Shavers facing an uncertain future due to a significant knee injury late in the season, Virgil’s experience will be instrumental as he joins Mecole Hardman and Stephen Gosnell, who are both reserve signings. The Bills currently have established receivers in Keon Coleman, Curtis Samuel, and Josh Palmer, but the status of all three remains uncertain as the team approaches the regular season, with Khalil Shakir being the only wide receiver assured a spot.
