The fourth annual Blue Future Conference, organized by The Plymouth Foundation, took place on Thursday, the 16th, at Hotel 1620, marking a significant event in Plymouth’s effort to establish itself as a leader in the marine economy. Stephen Cole, Executive Director of the Plymouth Regional Economic Development Foundation, emphasized the conference’s goal of enhancing awareness around workforce development initiatives and advocating for high-paying, growth-oriented jobs in marine sector industries.
A highlight of the event was the appearance of TV’s renowned science and engineering figure, Bill Nye, who served as a featured speaker. Cole noted the importance of aquaculture, particularly the role of kelp cultivation, in supporting the blue economy. He pointed out that Plymouth is the third-largest oyster producer in Massachusetts, underscoring aquaculture’s critical role in the region’s economic landscape.
In his address, Bill Nye shared innovative ideas on ocean resource management, particularly his enthusiasm for utilizing ocean pressure for desalination processes and the potential of turbine systems harnessing temperature differentials between surface and deep ocean waters. He called for careful management of fisheries to protect marine ecosystems and underlined the necessity for sustainable practices akin to farming.
As Plymouth continues to position itself as a hub for blue economy initiatives, the Blue Future Conference serves as an important platform for dialogue and collaboration among leaders in the marine industry, fostering greater economic opportunities while encouraging environmental stewardship.
