Simone Biles provided insight into the gesture she and her teammate Jordan Chiles made towards Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade as she received the gold medal in the women’s floor exercise at the 2024 Paris Olympics on August 5.
“It’s all about sportsmanship, and regardless of winning or losing, we will always support our competitors who have worked just as hard as we have,” Biles stated on TODAY on August 6.
During the medal ceremony, Biles and Chiles bowed to Andrade, who earned gold, while they secured silver and bronze, respectively. Biles praised Andrade, saying, “She had the best floor routine of the day and in the Olympics. She deserved it.”
After the bow, Andrade reached out for their hands, creating a memorable moment that quickly gained attention on social media, with many fans appreciating the display of camaraderie among the athletes.
Biles earned the silver medal with her performance, while Chiles received the bronze after a successful score inquiry that improved her ranking. Biles celebrated alongside Chiles when the results were announced.
“Seeing how excited Jordan was meant the world to her,” Biles commented. “We have trained so hard together, and competing on this stage again is incredible.”
Following the competition, Biles and Chiles shared an emotional moment back at the Olympic Village. Biles recalled breaking down in tears, expressing her pride and happiness for Chiles after their long journey together in gymnastics.
Biles also revealed she had been managing a lower-leg injury during the event. She appeared on TODAY in a precautionary boot and emphasized the need for rest, as she prepares for an upcoming tour.
Looking ahead, the 27-year-old Biles did not rule out the possibility of competing in the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, stating, “You never say never… The next Olympics is on home turf.”
Lastly, Biles shared that she and her husband, Jonathan Owens, are looking forward to starting a family in the future. “We both have goals to achieve before we start a family, but yes, that’s definitely in our future,” she stated.
