Big Brother Host’s COVID Absence: Who’s Taking Her Place?

Julie Chen Moonves has announced that she will be absent from the September 12 episode of “Big Brother” due to illness. The long-time host, who has been with the CBS competition show since its inception in July 2000, has never missed an eviction episode before this. She informed fans of her situation just hours before the live broadcast, stating that a guest host would take her place for the evening.

In an Instagram statement, Chen Moonves revealed, “Friday morning, I woke up with a sore throat and went to see my good friend who is an ENT. That night he called to say I have Covid. Thankfully, this is only the second time for me, and it’s been very mild! No fever and just a sore throat.”

She added, “Unfortunately, I am still testing positive as of this morning… Despite feeling good, strong, and my cough being gone, I must sit out tonight’s Big Brother live eviction show.”

Actor and talk show host Jerry O’Connell will fill in for her during this episode. Chen Moonves expressed her gratitude towards O’Connell, stating, “Thank you to Jerry O’Connell for filling in for me.” She humorously remarked, “I hope Jerry fits into my dress, has a ball, and tells the houseguests I miss them but will be watching from home.”

She also made a lighthearted comment, referencing the nickname “Chenbot” that some fans use for her, by saying, “See? Chenbot is human after all!” She concluded her message with her usual sign-off, encouraging love and enjoyment for the show, accompanied by emojis.

Support for Chen Moonves poured in from friends and fans in the comments, wishing her a swift recovery and expressing excitement for O’Connell’s temporary role. Andy Cohen sent well wishes, and a fan noted that O’Connell will do great in her place.

The official “Big Brother” Instagram account shared her message and wished her well, while also featuring a video from O’Connell, who introduced himself as the substitute host for the episode. He expressed his admiration for Chen Moonves, assuring everyone that she would return to “The Talk” on the same day.

In a humorous exchange, Chen Moonves called into “The Talk,” giving O’Connell advice about fitting into her dress for the night, indicating there was a corset in her dressing room that he could use. O’Connell will need to handle the eviction and interview the eliminated houseguest without revealing any spoilers, making this a significant challenge as the evicted contestant will become the first jury member of Season 26.
