The Big 12 Conference is currently investigating reports of “inappropriate chants” during the recent men’s basketball game where Oklahoma State defeated No. 16 BYU 99-92. Television coverage captured fans at Oklahoma State directing chants that included derogatory remarks aimed at BYU, with phrases such as “f— the Mormons” allegedly being heard after a foul was called against the Cowboys late in the game.

Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark confirmed the investigation, stating, “The Conference has zero tolerance for behavior of this nature and will address the matter in accordance with Big 12 sportsmanship policies.” This comes on the heels of a similar incident in September, where Colorado was fined $50,000 and reprimanded for a student section chant of “f— BYU” during a football game.

BYU coach Kevin Young expressed his disappointment regarding the incident, emphasizing the importance of class and respect. “It’s a great win for Oklahoma State University. Their fans should be proud,” he commented. “But it would be great if some class was in there as well.” Young noted the challenge of explaining such hostility to his children, reflecting on a broader societal issue regarding hate and intolerance towards religious beliefs.

Oklahoma State’s celebration following their upset victory included fans storming the court, an action that may also lead to penalties from the Big 12. The ongoing inquiry by the conference underscores the need for sportsmanship and respect, particularly amidst a landscape that continues to grapple with issues of intolerance.
