Former President Joe Biden attended the lie in state for Minnesota Representative Melissa Hortman, her husband Mark, and their golden retriever Gilbert on Friday at the Capitol in St. Paul. The family tragically lost their lives in a politically-motivated attack earlier this month, and their funeral is scheduled for Saturday.

Biden was one of the many mourners who came to honor the Hortmans, who were shot and killed almost two weeks ago. During his visit, he paid his respects at the memorial and shared a moment of reflection at the caskets of Melissa and Mark Hortman, as well as an urn for Gilbert. Biden engaged with emotional attendees during his visit, demonstrating compassion in a moment of profound grief.

In addition to honoring the Hortmans, Biden stopped by to visit Minnesota Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette at a local hospital. Both were victims of gun violence, suffering serious injuries in the same attack that took the lives of the Hortmans. Yvette provided an update on John’s condition, expressing relief that he is recovering and becoming more mobile.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and his wife Gwen were also present, among the numerous citizens and officials gathering to show their support and solidarity during this difficult time.

This tragic event highlights the ongoing issues surrounding gun violence and politically-motivated attacks in the United States. The community’s response, reflected in the turnout for the memorial and the support for the Hoffmans, emphasizes the importance of coming together in the face of such tragedies.

Hope remains as communities unite to address these challenges. Through collaboration and awareness, we can foster a safer environment for all.
