A new music initiative launched in Suva is aimed at empowering local youth as part of a broader community effort to combat the troubling trends of drug use and excessive time spent in kava bars. The initiative underscores the critical need for constructive activities that can offer alternative environments to potentially detrimental social settings.
The program, branded as “Bhajan Jamming,” was introduced by Sandeep Narayan Singh, the leader of Hindu Unity. It is designed to steer young individuals away from substance abuse and help them reconnect with their spiritual roots through music and shared experiences. Singh pointed out the concerning trend of many youths spending four to five hours at kava bars, which makes them increasingly vulnerable to negative influences and substance dependency.
“There’s a need to create a more uplifting environment,” Mr. Singh noted, emphasizing the initiative’s goal of engaging those who have drifted from traditional devotional practices. By incorporating music into a casual setting, “Bhajan Jamming” aims to be both accessible and inviting for the younger generation.
The program will feature a collective singing experience led by Anubhav Musicals, encouraging active participation rather than passive observation. Singh expressed optimism that this interactive musical approach would rekindle interest among youth in spiritual practices, while also fostering a sense of community and belonging.
Additionally, this initiative honors the late Reverend Simione Tugi, recognized for his influential role in community leadership and drug prevention. Music director Ranil Kumar highlighted that this pioneering event in Fiji aims to shift the perception of devotion from a performance-centered activity into a vibrant community celebration. “It’s all about coming together, singing, and dancing, which leads us into a deeper state of devotion,” he remarked.
Suneet Mehta, the High Commissioner of India to Fiji, noted that this gathering reflects the enduring cultural values that have sustained the Indo-Fijian community for generations. He emphasized the significance of preserving cultural heritage and spiritual connections that resonate deeply within the community.
With programs like “Bhajan Jamming,” there is hope for fostering positive outlets for youth, helping them embrace spirituality through music while navigating away from the challenges that currently threaten their well-being. This initiative could serve as a vital step in empowering the next generation and enhancing community cohesion.
