Pennsylvania residents should be vigilant as another text message scam is targeting individuals by posing as the Pennsylvania Department of Motor Vehicles (PennDOT). These fraudulent messages warn recipients that they have outstanding traffic tickets and threaten severe consequences, such as vehicle registration suspension and a temporary suspension of a driver’s license, unless payment is made immediately.
Aimee Inama from PennDOT has confirmed that these texts are not legitimate. She emphasized that PennDOT does not communicate about traffic violations or fines through text messages. “All of those texts are not from PennDOT, and they are a scam,” Inama stated.
The messages even go as far as claiming that individuals’ credit scores will be affected if payments are not made. However, a key indicator that these texts are fraudulent is the unrealistic claim of being from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Motor Vehicles, a non-existent entity. In reality, the relevant body is the PennDOT Division of Drivers and Vehicle Services.
If you receive such a text, it is crucial not to click on any links. Instead, report it as spam and delete the message. For those who may have concerns or have received the message, PennDOT encourages reporting through their official website.
It is essential to stay informed and cautious to protect yourself from scams like these. By spreading awareness, residents can help shield themselves and their communities from potential fraud.
