Beware: New Scam Targeting Pennsylvanians Posing as PennDOT

Scammers are once again targeting Pennsylvanians by posing as the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) to issue false claims of unpaid traffic fines. Recent reports show that these fraudulent text messages demand payment for tickets that recipients do not actually owe.

A significant warning sign of this scam is the sender’s address, which does not match any official PennDOT communication. The misleading message threatens individuals with penalties from the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), including suspension of vehicle registration and driving privileges if the alleged fine is not paid.

Adding to the alarm, the scam now includes a threatening claim that unpaid charges could be transferred to a toll booth, incurring a hefty 35% service fee. Recipients are directed to click on a link to process payment; however, this link has been disabled and reported as a fraudulent website.

News 8 On Your Side has received numerous reports from viewers who have encountered these scam messages. The best advice for anyone receiving such a text is to disregard it and delete the message to avoid falling victim to these deceptive practices.

Remaining vigilant and informed is crucial in combating these scams. It’s always best to verify any unexpected payments through official channels.
