Highlighting the increased vulnerability of text messages exchanged between Android and Apple devices, CISA officials noted that these communications lack encryption, making them susceptible to interception. Jeff Greene, the CISA executive assistant director for cybersecurity, emphasized the importance of encryption, stating, “Encryption is your friend,” and that using encrypted messaging or voice communications can significantly enhance security against potential threats.
In an effort to bolster security measures, CISA, FBI, and other federal collaborators released the “Enhanced Visibility and Hardening Guidance for Communications Infrastructure” on December 4. This guide outlines practices for safeguarding against cyber risks linked to compromised networks operated by major global telecommunications providers. Greene reiterated the serious nature of the PRC-affiliated cyber activities, stressing that they threaten critical infrastructure, governmental operations, and businesses.
The hacking campaign, referred to as “Salt Typhoon,” is attributed to a Chinese cyber group and includes attacks on major telecom providers such as Verizon and AT&T. This incident represents one of the most significant intelligence breaches in U.S. history. Following the announcement of the Salt Typhoon incident, congressional leaders urged telecom companies to prioritize cybersecurity protocols to safeguard American data against sophisticated foreign attacks. Fortunately, officials indicated that the Salt Typhoon campaign was managed without significant impact on consumer services.
