Ann-Margret fondly recalls her experiences with the legendary Bette Davis during the filming of their 1961 movie, “Pocketful of Miracles.” In a recent interview with Interview Magazine, the 84-year-old actress shared insights into her early career and the significant influence Davis had on her as a young actor.
Despite Davis’s well-documented reputation as a demanding actress, Ann-Margret experienced a different side of her costar. Portraying Davis’s daughter in the film, she felt a genuine connection with the veteran actress. Ann-Margret expressed her appreciation for Davis’s guidance during her first major role at the age of 20.
“I was about to have a close-up,” Ann-Margret reminisced. She admitted to feeling uncertain about film terminology, such as close-shot and medium-shot. However, Davis was quick to step in, stopping the filming to ensure Ann-Margret was prepared for her moment. “She was there and she, at one point, stopped all the filming and said, ‘Ann-Margret, this is your close-up, I want you to look as good as you possibly can. Makeup! Hair!’”
Davis’s care did not go unnoticed, as the crew promptly attended to Ann-Margret’s appearance. Once the adjustments were made, Davis approved of the look before resuming filming, demonstrating the nurturing side of the Hollywood star.
This beautiful memory showcases not just the camaraderie that can exist between actors, but also the importance of mentorship in the industry. Ann-Margret’s experience serves as a reminder that, behind the glitz and challenges of Hollywood, supportive relationships can pave the way for the next generation of talent.
