At 93 years old, Bertha Jean Bharat reflects on her rich past with a serene clarity that captivates those around her. Her memories transport her back to a simpler time, when telegrams were the primary means of communication and life moved at a more leisurely pace. Few can match her vitality, exemplified by her ongoing passion for cooking, cleaning, and tending to her garden in Raiwaqa.
Born on October 30, 1932, Bertha’s journey began in Levuka, where she was raised by her devoted grandparents and parents. Her family’s story is steeped in resilience, beginning with her father’s migration from Labasa, a move spurred by the loss of his parents. Bertha fondly recalls her childhood, where she attended St. Thomas Primary School in Lautoka before transitioning to boarding school at St. Joan of Arc Primary School in Sigatoka.
Bertha’s educational path shifted when her father decided she should help care for her family instead of continuing her schooling. She embraced this role wholeheartedly, assisting her mother and supporting her nine siblings for over two decades on Makogai Island. Now, only three of the original nine siblings remain, with Bertha being the eldest.
Relocating to Suva introduced her to various employment opportunities, including 15 years at a milk bar owned by Morris Fan and later working as a house girl for an Air Force pilot and his wife. After losing her mother at age 70, Bertha settled in Raiwaqa, where she has resided for over 30 years.
Despite facing personal losses, including the passing of her two daughters, Celine and Theresa, Bertha’s family has grown to include 11 grandchildren and an impressive 27 great-grandchildren. She plays an active role in their lives, waking at 3 am each day to pray and prepare meals, upholding a routine that keeps her engaged and independent.
Bertha’s diet is varied, and she prefers to enjoy her meals without restrictions, steering clear of alcohol and tobacco. Her commitment to health extends beyond nutrition; she maintains an active lifestyle by walking in her neighborhood and attending mass every Sunday.
As she welcomes each new year, Bertha expresses gratitude for her well-being and the support of her family. Her timeless wisdom offers insight to others, emphasizing the importance of contentment and living well.
